Research

I'm interested in studying the regionalization of pediatric acute care, and its attendant effects on outcomes and costs. In particular, I am interested in the balance of volume-outcome relationships and the economic effects of hospital consolidation; systems to improve prehospital and interhospital triage and transport of critically ill and injured children; and how geography affects access to, and outcomes of, pediatric acute care.

I've highlighted some of my most interesting work below.

Selected Works

Joseph AM, Davis BS, Kahn JM. (2023). “Association Between Hospital Consolidation and Loss of Pediatric Inpatient Services.” JAMA Pediatrics. 177(8): 859-860.
We use the American Hospital Association annual survey to document losses of inpatient pediatric services, and to show that hospital consolidation is an independent risk factor for losing inpatient pediatric services.

Joseph AM, Horvat CM, Evans IV, Kuch BA, Kahn JM. (2022). “Helicopter versus ground ambulance transport for interfacility transport of critically ill children.” American Journal of Emergency Medicine 61: 44-51.
We use a quasi-experimental design to study whether helicopter transport saves time (it does) and improves outcomes (it might) for critically ill children requiring interfacility transport.

McIntyre AL, Joseph AM, Bagley N. (2017). “Small Change, Big Consequences: Partial Medicaid Expansions Under the Affordable Care Act.” New England Journal of Medicine 377(11): 1004-1006.
We analyze the legal and policy implications of proposed "partial" Medicaid expansions under the Affordable Care Act.

Joseph AM. (2017). “Kid Tested, FDA Approved: Examining Pediatric Drug Testing.” Food and Drug Law Journal 72(4): 543-562.
I analyze the legal incentives and requirements for pediatric drug testing, and show that most drug trials conducted in kids are underpowered, poorly designed, or both.

Joseph AM, Adashi EY. (2015). “Health CO-OPs of the Affordable Care Act: Promise and Peril at the 5-Year Mark.” JAMA 313(14): 1419-1420
We analyze the rare successes, and more common failures, of the CO-OP program in the ACA -- the proposed replacement for the "public option."
